 When I am armed with my pen and pad, the world can do no harm

It is my safe space the place that I call home.

It is the place that I can be myself

When I don't feel like myself

My pen and my pad is everything outside of God

I can go to the highest mountain top

I can go to the valley low

There is no telling the depth that I can go

Armed with my pen and pad, that's all I need

Where I have been?

So I know you see that there’s a gap between the last time I posted and now, and I wanted to give you an update on where I’ve been. In late January, my dad passed away. It was about four months after my brother passed, and during that time, of course, I was grieving, trying to figure out life, and realizing that the two men who may have loved me the most—up until this point—are gone. The two men who had my back throughout the years are gone. And I will say, it is not easy to go through those things. Obviously, I thought me and my brother had more time. How did I get started in writing?

 I've always loved to read. Ever since I was little, I devoured words—anything I could get my hands on. Back of cereal boxes. Doritos bags. If it had letters, I was reading it. But it wasn’t until eighth grade when my teacher, Mrs. Andrews, introduced me to something that would change my life: free writing . She explained it as simply grabbing a pen and a piece of paper and letting your thoughts flow—no editing, no structure, no pressure. Just write . And baby, when I tell you I fell in love… it was over. That was it for me. That’s when I started filling notebooks. I’ve been writing ever since. But fast forward to 2020—that’s when something different happened. That’s when God pivoted me . Now, I’m not entirely sure how this all came together, except that I know it was God. I had no real plans to become an author, but somehow it unfolded beautifully. My first book, Love and Relationships , was born during that time. My Hair, My Story: Letting Go and Living Free

  As an African-American woman, my hair journey mirrors the experiences of so many others. For most of us, it started with long, growing hair that our mothers or caretakers lovingly maintained. We may or may not have hated the straightening process, but at some point, someone suggested getting a relaxer or a perm. In my case, I desperately wanted a perm and didn’t heed my mother’s warning about scratching my scalp before the treatment. I lied and told her I hadn’t scratched it, but I had, and when she applied the relaxer, I ended up with burns and sores on my scalp. My hair never fully recovered from that moment. It didn’t grow back the way it should have, and it became the first turning point in a lifelong struggle with my hair. As I got older, my cousin offered to cut my hair, and I agreed, not realizing the impact it would have. She styled it into an asymmetrical cut when I was in sixth or seventh grade.
